The Directorate of National Repository and Research(DNRR) has made remarkable strides in managing and enhancing our national collections. Through dedication and hard work, the team has not only achieved but surpassed several ambitious targets. Here’s an overview of our accomplishments in the management of the National Repository:
- New Acquisitions and Curation: Our team has exceeded expectations by acquiring over 3,545 new specimens, artifacts, and publications, surpassing the target by 473%. Additionally, we curated 16,093 databases, achieving 322% of the target. These efforts ensure that our collections remain rich and up-to-date for research and public benefit.
- Exchange Programs and Collection Repairs: We operationalized three exchange programs with an achievement rate of 300%, fostering collaboration and expanding knowledge across institutions. The Directorate also repaired 37,130 specimens, achieving 186% of the target, demonstrating our commitment to preserving our heritage.
- Fieldtrip Contributions and Curated Collections: Over 4,353 collections were deposited after field trips, surpassing our goal by 116%. Moreover, we curated an impressive 2,516,978 collections, achieving 101% of our target and ensuring well-preserved and organized resources for future generations.
- Infrastructure and Exhibition Development: We met our objectives in assessing research, conservation, and repository infrastructure and rehabilitating permanent exhibitions, both at 100%. These achievements reinforce our role as a trusted custodian of Kenya’s cultural and natural heritage.
- Digital Transformation: Nearly 24,238 collections were digitized, achieving 97% of our target. While this fell slightly short, it represents substantial progress towards making our collections more accessible digitally, a key priority for future developments.
Despite these successes, some targets remain unmet. Plans for establishing the Mau Mau Museum and partnership office have not yet materialized, and efforts are ongoing to appoint officers for the partnership office. We remain committed to overcoming these challenges and fulfilling our mandate.
This year’s achievements reflect the dedication of our team and partners, bringing us closer to our vision of an accessible, well-maintained, and widely recognized repository. We look forward to building on these successes in the coming years.
